Ahhhh, I always love the look of the Optare Solo. Such a cheerful looking bus, it’s a shame they don’t use them in the States.

The Enviro series always looked overly front-heavy to me, even more so than standard rear-engine buses; their design language is evolving but I’m not entirely sure it’s for the better...

The Optare Solos weren’t received well in my county as they had less seats than the one they replaced. Disabled access was better but had less disabled seating.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro series looks better than the old Dart but all the Enviro series all look the same and plain. No real variety.

I know nothing about buses, but when I Googled ‘Optare Solo’ I found this older Solo in the ‘First’ livery, which brings back memories.

I would have thought the Solos would be used on smaller routes where larger buses are rarely filled to capacity; are they really that much smaller than a standard box-shaped bus?

The Enviros may look boring but they sure beat the Gilligs they use in our area.

I think it came down to something like three or five seats less than the short Enviro series buses, but it was sufficient to get commuters complaining. They do the same route as the larger buses but do the off peak times on different routes.

We have two companies competing in my area. It used to be just Stagecoach but then another Carlisle firm, Reays, that expanded around the county started doing the same routes.

It keeps fares down and means there is a bus every ten or twenty minutes.

I don’t use buses myself. It’s either car or taxi for me.

I don’t really either, but watching others play too much OMSI 2 has provided me with more knowledge than I would care to admit, especially on Euro buses.

Why would they Peugeot? That’s not even close to domestic. And if they’re going by location of manufacture, then they’ve missed Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Renault, et al. Why not use Ford Sierras? They’re a bit closer to British, though it’s a German design...

It’s not about them being made locally or nationally it’s about who can provide a vehicle that’s fit for purpose and well priced.

You just have to look at our emergency service vehicles.

The German state of Hesse where the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia are made ordered 800 back in 2010, by 2012 they found after receiving 200 units that the drivers found them uncomfortable, they couldn’t see too well over their shoulder while wearing body armour, etc...

A state police force in Germany has been left red-faced after placing a ?25 million ($32m) order for 800 Opel Insignia wagons which turned out to be unsuitable for its officers.

According to Germany’s English-language news site The Local , 200 cars had already been delivered to the police force of the central-western German state of Hesse when an internal poll by police union GdP (Gewerkschaft der Polizei: Trade Union of the Police) found the car’s seats were too narrow when officers were wearing the heavily-equipped belts, and the visibility was also deemed not good enough during car chases.

The deal between the General Motors brand and the Hesse law enforcement bureau was struck at the end of 2010, and the Hesse Interior Ministry is reportedly still deciding whether the rest of the deal will be completed.

Deputy chairman of GdP, Lothar Holzgen, claims the ministry should have tested the cars more thoroughly before making the order. He says the rearward visibility, which is quite hampered due to the car’s sloping roofline, was a major issue.

“I need to see out of the back every minute, every second,” Holzgen told The Local. “That’s a safety matter for us.”

A ministry spokeswoman claimed the seats were tested prior to the cars being signed for.

“The results did not point to any lack of suitability for police service,” the spokeswoman is quoted as saying.
